DANIEL KRULL

Our Angler of the Month for December is Daniel Krull from Rochdale, MA! A big congratulations to Daniel for a great year and getting into some stunning mirrors over this past month!

An American Carp Society member and passionate Carp angler, Daniel has been dedicating his time to pursuing this great species on the East Coast for a number of years now. These fish are a great example of what U.S Carping has to offer. We loved these most recent shots of his captures, paired with one of the coolest worn ACS caps we could find! ACS MEMBER NEEDS HELP!

Hi, We appreciate you taking a moment to read Arno’s story. Recently, Arno was diagnosed with Enterohemorrhagic bacteria (EHEC) that’s producing Shiga toxin. He requires intense 12-15 weeks treatment including Platelet Transfusion for his condition. This includes 30 treatments, two times a week. Medical cost after insurance would be an estimate of 77,800 US dollars. Our goal is to start as soon as possible to avoid further medical complication such as anemia or extra dialysis.

All the money donated will go towards medical expenses. Any amount you’re willing to contribute is greatly appreciated and if you’re not able to contribute at this time, please share with friends and family to help us reach our goal. Thank you!

Some beautiful captures and shots were possible when most other states in the USA are either getting snow or the temperatures are dropping dramatically. Big congrats Dagur on these wonderful pictures!

The Wiggle Worm

The wiggle worm fly was one of the first flies I  learned how to tie, and the first fly I tied on my own. There are many different styles and variations  of worm or grub based flies, but the wiggle worm was made because I wasn’t very good at tying flies, and I couldn’t always have my brother tie all my flies. And I would be broke if I bought all of my flies seeing how many end up in a tree or snapped off somewhere.  It is simple, just about as barebones you could get with a fly. Despite its simplicity, it still remains one of my most effective carp flies as well as one of  my most used. Because of  its simple nature, I can always pump out a few of these neat flies when I get to tying. Whether you are an expert, intermediate, or a beginner fly carper, the wiggle worm is a great one to have in the box. It is easy to create your own variations and additions because it’s already a solid base. So if you have anything that works really well in your area it’s easy to add or adapt the looks of the wiggle worm.

But throwing this fly has taught me that sometimes less is more.

Step 1-Hook

First grab a hook and place it in your vice. For this fly I use a size 6 steelhead fly because it’s a smaller, sturdy hook with good curvature. Start wrapping your thread around the shank and secure it so it won’t fall off on its own.

Step 2 -Eyes

Once your hook is placed and you have a layer of thread around the shank, place the eyes on the hook. Make sure you’ll have enough room to add dubbing in front of your eyes and for the finishing knot.  The eyes I use are β…› size. Wrap your thread diagonally across one eye for five or so turns until it stays on its own and repeat across the other diagonal of the eyes. Even out the horizontal leveling. Make sure your thread stays the same direction as your wrapping. Finish it off with a figure 8 to secure the eyes tightly.

Step 3-Tail

I use chenille for the tail. There are many kinds of chenille in the fly fishing world, but aim for a thicker diameter so it will match the body. I like looking in the craft stores for chenille to use. I can buy an unnecessarily large roll for about the same price as a pack at the fly shop. Take a section of your chenille and cut it at about an inch and a half so that when you tie it on an inch hangs from the back of the body. Before you tie it on it’s good to shape the tail by holding a lighter close to the chenille. It will melt in direct contact and you may need to start over if it does. I do melt the ends so the chenille keeps its shape and doesn’t unravel. Put a slight taper along the tail. You are aiming for making it look like a worm so end it with a point and keep the fatter section towards the body. Place the tail behind the eyes and secure.

Step 4-Dubbing

Now there are many different color patterns I tie with this fly, but the dubbing I use is always a natural color and for a little pizazz I add a similar ice dub along with it.  For this example reddish brown is what I went with. A dubbing loop isn’t necessary, for this fly I just twist the dubbing along the thread before I wrap it.  Start at the end of the body and move up to the eyes. Don’t try to get the full body all at once, do it in layers and mix in the ice dub as you go. I  go over the eyes and onto the part of the hook left before the eyes in front as well to keep more cushioning on the fly as it hits the water.  A nice fat, dubbing body goes a long way when reducing splash.

Step 5-Finishing up

Once you are set with the dubbing, whip finish the front and tie off the knot. Snip the excess thread. Take an old toothbrush, or any brush, and brush out the dubbing.  The bushier dubbing helps silencing the plop as it hits the water. Once your knot is tied off and your dubbing is brushed out, seal the knot with UV finish and let it dry. That’s it, you’ve tied a carp fly that I keep in my box at all times.

A few variations I mix into the wiggle worm that don’t change the steps of tying this fly are color, and eye size. If I need to get deeper or sink faster I move up to 5/32 size eyes. It’s just a tad bigger but it will make a difference. It sinks fast yet is surprisingly still soft when it hits the water if the dubbing is done correctly.  Although I would say since there still is more weight, it creates a bit more of a disturbance then the smaller 1 ⁄ 8 size, weightless or bead chain eyed flies, but it makes up for that with a quick, quicker sinking rate. That means when you have to get down to them fast or there’s a bit more of a current, the eyes will be there to help instead of hinder. Despite all that, I still use this quite a bit in the shallows. I just really remember to cast over the fish not on top of them. Other color schemes I use are lighter and darker variants. For the lighter color a natural tan with a whitened pink work well. In the cool spring I like using a black dubbing body with a white chenille to contrast the dark body. It looks very much like the white grubs that come out of the mud early in the year. The base is there and there’s a lot to play around with. See what tasty things you can adapt the wiggle worm with. I am interested to see what y’all can do.

Whenever the bite is tough, I can always count on the wiggle worm. Its natural simplicity piques the interest of many soon to be fooled carp.  I’ve landed fish on it all from spring to fall, and oftentimes when all else fails I tie one one and my luck begins to change. Enjoy.
