November Edition

BRIAN DAUGHERTY

Our angler of the month for November is Brian Daugherty, from Michigan! Austin Pass and Brian have been scouting lakes consistently since they started their angling passion many years ago…and recently this work has really paid off!

In true U.S. pioneering style, Brendan and Austin have been trying to figure out the patterns of some very special fish in an unknown large U.S. lake for many months, joined by their friends David Oliver and Derek Wunder…this work has recently come to fruition and the many hours of studying the fish has well and truly been rewarded. It’s this type of commitment and work that goes into discovering new lakes and fish in our vast country. A big congratulations to everyone involved for putting in the hours…taking the blanks…and figuring it all out!

Some great lens work coming across the social feed in October! These shots particularly stood out for us…Great job guys, keep up that creative lens-work!

NOTABLE CAPTURES

The Fall is here!…October colors have been wonderful in many parts of the USA and some of the fish captures truly stand out because of this! We are seeing some larger fish being caught as they will now start feeding heavily in preparation for the Winter months. These photos below caught our attention in the month of October so we thought that some extra recognition was warranted. Congratulations to everyone on the success of their angling sessions this past month. We appreciate all of your tags and mentions, and can’t wait to see what everyone is catching over this next month! Top of the POPS - BY: DON LOW

With an onset of late Fall and into Winter, particularly with the recent storms, there will be a lot of leaf litter and other debris on the bottom of lakes and rivers. At this time of year, it’s increasingly important to target the Northerly bank, the one that gets the most sun, as even a 1 degree increase in water temperature will mean the Carp naturally settle in those areas. Often this is also the bank that gets the prevailing wind, which only increases the amount of β€œChod”.

For me, fishing in these warmer spots means using pop-ups. It’s the best way to ensure you are presenting a bait that can be easily found by the Carp, and that the hook point isn’t masked by all the junk on the bottom. There are many good pop-up rigs out there. My personal preference is for a higher presentation at this time of year, which I feel is going to do better. In these situations a stiff hinge rig on a helicopter leader set up or the chod rig is perfect, and allows you to fish with confidence. Both offer a fantastic hooking arrangement that nails them more often than not. I’ve certainly done well on them over the last six weeks or so. Lots of brands offer pre-tied rigs and leaders if you don’t want to make your own.

If you want to use a lower lying presentation, then the multi-rig and the ronnie rig will work very well. On a recent very crisp morning session with long time fishing buddy, Dan Sinagra, that had temperatures drop to the mid 20’s and saw a hard ground frost, he used them and managed to get a fish while I blanked. His β€œedge” was to attach a small PVA mesh bag of bread that had been put through a food processor. Make pop-ups your first choice this time of year and give bread sticks a go. You will be pleasantly surprised how good they can be.

Tight lines!

October was another great month for many of our Carp on the fly members across the USA. With the Fall here, we are seeing the fly fishing start to slow down for the year but some glorious fish are still being captured and these photos below certainly caught our attention in the month of October. Congratulations to everyone on the success of their angling sessions this past month…We appreciate all of your tags and mentions, and can’t wait to see what everyone is catching over this next month! The 2021 mill creek cup

What can we say…Without all of you, this would not be possible. Our members, their support, encouragement and participation in all that we do makes the difference.

2021 MCC

Sean, Chief Brad Allison and Wayne

With some of the very best anglers traveling from across the country to participate in the 2021 MCC, we were anticipating a great event in November. With luck and weather on our side, this year we were especially happy to see so many fish caught at the event! Known for not being an β€˜easy water,’ everyone that attended worked and fished hard until the very end. A big congratulations goes out to all of the participants and winners this year… It was a battle up to the very last minute, which always makes for some great moments…if you are lucky enough to catch them on film!

With continued help from the great city of Canton, we will be expanding swims to the other side of the lake for next year’s event, continuing to grow the sport and with the help of the city, getting even more accessible swims at parts of the lake that have never been previously fished.

There were some beautiful Carp that were caught this year and a few surprises as well in the form of a Koi that we didn’t know was in the lake. A big congrats to Cesar Espinoza on that capture!

The initial cold front that came into Canton the day before the event saw most of the fish in the deeper part of the lake but as we neared toward the final day, the fish had started to move. For those that had sat behind motionless indicators for 48 hours, the sound of Carp crashing was a welcomed transition before daybreak.

We will be making a film of the entire event in the coming weeks that will feature all of the captures and moments…but for now a few still shots from behind the lens to share with everyone. A big shoutout to our own, Kelcey Combs, on securing all of our incredible sponsors that enabled us to serve both breakfast and dinner to all of the pegs…and an extra special thanks to Treaty Oak Distilling…when those temperatures dropped…that whiskey was very welcomed!

An extra special thanks to the city of Canton, Chief Brad Alison and Matt Stroud for always being so supportive and helpful…without you, this would not be possible.

15 minutes before the buzzer!
